Welcome to My Practice

Dr. Ferguson, Provides Individual, Couples, and Family Counseling for a variety of emotional and mental health issues.  Dr. Ferguson specializes in individual and family recovery from addiction and couples therapy.  Dr. Ferguson takes an integrative approach in therapy, drawing from the most well accepted theories to apply methods and techniques most appropriate to the problem or concern.

If you think you might need a little help with depression, anxiety, relationship issues, substance abuse or any other emotiona/mental health issue, then you probably do.  Most of the issues that bring people into counseling do not generally "get better" simply by hoping that they will.  Getting help can be anxiety provoking, but that initial fear goes away quickly to be replaced by feelings of hope and encouragement.  Those seeking assistance for a variety of mental health, substance abuse/depedence, and relationship issues may find help here.

My approaches to mental health, marriage/family, and substance abuse counseling are practical, interactive, and solution-focused.  I provide support, practical feedback and guidance to help clients resolve current problems and long-standing patterns.  Together, we will find solutions to your challenges and psychological/emotional issues.

Utilizing several theoretical frameworks and approaches, I press into service the most appropriate styles and techniques to assist you, as an individual or as a couple, in ways most helpful to you.  We will work to build on your strengths to identify and achieve life goals.

In our initial session, you and I together, identify the problems, issues, or symptoms that may be troubling you.  We will also identify your strengths and skills, then develop a formal plan of action to tackle those problems.  Our plan of action serves as a blueprint to accomplish your goals.  Therapeutic goals may include skill building (e.g., development of communication skills, abstinence skills or relapse prevention skills), working through unresolved issues and feelings (e.g. abandonment, resentments, abuse, infidelity) and reducing symptoms (e.g., depression, anxiety, insomnia).  Unhappy and distressed couples may regain the emotional closeness and restore stability and happiness to the relationship.

Addiction Recovery

My practice provides non-medical aspects of assessment and treatment of substance abuse at all stages of recovery--from intervention to post-inpatient treatment and continuing care.   A major area of speciality is working with family members of the chemically dependent.  I have been involved in program development of inpatient treatment programs and have served as Family Focus Week Facilitator at a renowned Inpatient Chemical Dependency Treatment Center.  In practice in Stillwater, OK since l990, I have indepth awareness and familiarity with other services offered locally and statewide and can refer patients (or family members) to other professionals and services as needed and appropriate.

Marriage/Family Therapy

My focus in working with families has often involved aiding the couple/family in moving from arguing/fighting into pro-active problem solving and effective communication, healing old emotional wounds, re-establishing trust, and reestablishing positive regards and feeling loved.  With a comfortable, supportive, and non-judgmental atmosphere, couples can achieve the personal growth they’re striving for.

Mental Health Counseling

Using an integrative approach which incorporates direction, tools, and techniques from several theoretical frameworks, we work to eliminate or reduce your mental health symptoms.  Common mental health problems presented in counseling include depression, anxiety issues and disorders, self-sabotaging behavior, low self-esteem, anger and other feelings management issues, adult ADHD, grief, stress management, and many more. Psychological testing and evaluations are also provided through our offices by Dr. Linda Evans, Ph.D.

Emotional Development and College Success

Many bright young people who skated through high school with popularity and without challenge, suddenly find themselves unprepared for the demands of college, academically, socially, or emotionally.  My counseling services for college students pick up where academic counseling leaves off.  Self defeating patterns, emotional insecurities, and inadequate social skills may be identified and remediated.

Family Business Issues

Family business involve a myriad of complicated relationship dynamics that can confuse boundaries between family and work relationships, affect emotional closeness and loyalties, as well disrupting the effectiveness of the business.  Experience in working with members of family businesses for over thirty years enables me to provide education, direction, and support for relationship dynamics such as family conflict, sibling rivalry, economic changes, and management transitions.

Other Referral for Additional Services

If in the course of counseling, it becomes apparent that additional services or treatment is needed, psychiatry, clinical testing/evaluation are available within our offices.  We also provide referral to appropriate to additional specialized professionals or to another level of care, as needed.
